Drumming against throbbing ribs, my

heart spurs me onward, throws me down

onto damp, grassy ground, sends

rushing blood through my ears.

Wait. Deep breath, eyes down, nose

near-buried in soil drenched in shadows,

and yesterday's rain. Barking, yapping,

vicious growling - so close. A yell.

'He's not here!' Squelching footsteps,

heavy, running. Away. Everything quiets,

I roll over, finding a starless sky.

Fingers clutch a heavy backpack: victorious.

Oskar Leonard is a teenage poet from the UK, focusing on observational and realism poetry.
